NewsByte

Project Overview

NewsByte is a mobile news aggregation app inspired by Way2News, built for a client who wanted to deliver hyper-local and national news to Telugu-speaking users. The app delivers a personalized news feed based on category preferences, supports bookmarking, and sends breaking news push notifications — all in a clean, fast native interface.

Key Features

• Personalized Feed — Users select preferred categories on onboarding; the feed algorithm ranks stories by recency, category weight, and engagement.
• OTP Login — Phone-number-based OTP authentication via SMS — no passwords, no friction.
• Bookmarks & Read History — Articles saved locally with SQLite for offline access; read history tracked for "continue reading" suggestions.
• Push Notifications — Breaking news alerts via Expo Notifications with category-level opt-in/opt-out controls.
• RSS Aggregation Backend — Node.js backend aggregates from multiple Telugu and English news RSS sources, deduplicates, and normalizes articles into a single feed API.

Tech Stack

React Native with Expo Router for file-based native navigation, NativeWind for Tailwind-style styling, Node.js backend with RSS aggregation pipeline, PostgreSQL for user data and article metadata, and EAS Build for iOS and Android distribution.
